Show Review - Rapheumet's Well / Ground Zero, Spartanburg, SC

 
Rapheumets Well is a symphonic black metal band from Hickory, North Carolina who, earlier this year, released their album The Exile on Test Your Metal Records. I was excited to be able to attend their recent show at Ground Zero in Spartanburg, South Carolina this past Saturday. This local band blew me away. During soundcheck, Annette Greene (Choir, Vocals, Keys) began singing some of the Sound of Music in her angelic voice and with a little laughter, the audience began to sing a few bars with her. The atmosphere was lively and jovial.
Once soundcheck was concluded, the band went straight into Resurrecting the Blood Gate. http://localmusicplay.com/main/7029/ With it's acoustic beginning, and the fog entering the stage from the left, you felt that you were entering into another realm led by Jeb Laird on vocals. The audience was immediately captivated. The harmonizing of Annette with Jeb was purely magical. With each song played, you were brought deeper into the realm which left you wanting more.

They toured the east coast this past summer, going as far north as Canada and as far south as Tampa, Florida with another tour in the works for next summer. Be on the lookout for upcoming dates in or near your area. This is a band you do not want to miss.

Tribute Bands - Pantera vs. Cowgirls From Hell

A long, long time ago, in a land far away (called Arlington, TX), 2 brothers got together and formed a little band some of you may know, Pantera.  "Dimebag", Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo are the ones who made up Pantera.  They originally started as a glam metal band, but after their fourth album changed to a heavier, thrash type metal sound. In 1990, their 5th album "Cowboys From Hell" was released with their new, heavier sound. Over the years, they have continuously influenced musicians to follow in their style of thrashy, heavy metal music. Unfortunately, due to the death of "Dimebag" in 2004, remaining members have said that there can never be a reunion.

Fast forward a little bit, to early 2015,  and we see a group of young women out of San Diego, Ca. They, in fact, take their name from Pantera's 5th album, and changed it slightly to Cowgirls from Hell. They are an all female Pantera tribute band, that are breaking down barriers, rocking hard and kicking ass. "Sexy, powerful, and far beyond driven, these women leave audiences in shock with their ability to recreate the most dominating music in metal history. From shredding Dimebag solos, to crushing the rhythms of Vinnie Paul & Rex Brown, to harnessing the unbridled power and stage antics of Phil Anselmo, the Cowgirls from Hell deliver a live show so convincing that fans go crazy when they hear it!"
Check out these rockers and hopefully you will be as impressed with them as I am. I have not seen them live, but believe me, if they come near us, we will definately be there.

Notable bands out of Charlotte, NC

As most of you know, we are located out of Charlotte, NC, otherwise known as the Queen City. So today, especially since Charlotte is getting so much attention, I have decided to talk about something positive about our city. We have some great local artist/bands from the Charlotte area. If you haven't heard of them, we would like to introduce you to them. These guys are great and perform when and where they can. Check them out if you get a chance!

Antiseen is one of the acts spotlighted. They have been around for over 30 years, have over 100 EPs, LPS and CDs recorded and have toured the world over. This is one of their playlist so you can hear a selection of their music. I remember going to see them for their 30th anniversary show at Tremont. What a treat it was! Totally unique and hard rockers. Here's to many more years guys!

The Reason You Stayed is a kick ass all female group from Charlotte. They started together while in high school at a Performing Arts High School. Fast forward a couple of years and now they have more original music. It has been great to see their musical growth, and I look forward to great things to come from these ladies.

Hootie Hoo is a duo of rappers out of the Queen City. Gram Master Mario has skills and makes us enjoy his laid back, fun, feel good music. These guys are heavily influenced by the hip-hop of the 90's and it reflects in their rhymes.

Artist Spotlight - TiME

TiME is a local southern metal band from the Charlotte, NC area. These hard rocking guys write their own music and can bring down the house at their live shows. If you are lucky enough to catch one of their shows, you will see and hear unique, amazing vocals, original lyrics, dizzing guitar riffs and hard rocking drum fills. The tightness of the music will make you understand why they have the most popular/most viewed playlist on http://localmusicplay.com/ We caught them opening a show for The Fetish on Sept 17, and I must say, they were by far, the best of the 5 bands that played that night. Their versatility is what makes them "tick".  They can jam out and rock hard and heavy, or slow it down a bit and move you to tears.

Years of hard work really show with these guys. Most of them have been sharpening their instruments and vocals since they were kids. As a matter of fact, the lead singer / guitar player, Rob Husband, is the one who taught Kenny how to play electric guitar when he was 14.

The band is made up of Rob "RVoice"  Husband (vocals, guitar, songwriting), William "Warbass" Rogers (vocals, bass guitar), Chris "Grill" Hobbs (guitar), Ronnie "Stomp" Edwards (guitar) and we welcome their newest member Brandon Marze on drums.

This was from a live performance in Greenville, SC. Some crazy fan decided to get up on stage and show his appreciation for the band. (I wonder who that could have been.) You can tell that even as they rock hard, they feed off the energy of the fans.

Female Fronted Rock Bands

Alot of attention has been given lately to female fronted rock bands. More recently than I think I can ever remember seeing. Music is music and affects people differently, regardless of who fronts the bands. These women are showing the strength of their vocals and sometimes their instruments, such as guitar playing. They put themselves out there sometimes knowing that sometimes,controversy may follow. Critics may have issues with the way they dress (or lack of), the way they tend to be outspoken, or may just have issues with a strong independent female. Regardless these women are becoming pioneers and role models for up and coming musicians. My belief, is that no one should be put in a box, or told how to think or what to say. Some of the women I have chosen to look at today, represent this and so much more. These women rock hard and constantly strive to be better and connect with their fans. There is so much we can learn from them like they have learned from people such as Joan Jett, Lita Ford and The Great Kat. They make the music they want, their way. It may not be conventional, but is amazing none the less. As a female, I appreciate and respect these women. What they stand for and represent. They make it possible for younger generations to realize that they don't have to hide behind a mask, unless they want to. Scream, growl, sing or shred as you desire. Be the strong musicians that you are meant to be. Your influence will be far reaching for generations to come.

The Great Kat - "Flight of the Bumblebee"
Definately not what you would call conventional but brilliant and amazing. She is the fastest female guitar player in the world and has revolutionized the guitar industry by playing classical greats to heavy, thrashing guitar riffs. As Kat would say "Shred On"!

Jasmine Cain
This is one hard rocking chick out of Nashville, Tn. She is a strong female, and not afraid to get out on stage, raise some hell and stage dive as often as possible. Recently, she wrapped a 2 week stent in Sturgis. I caught some of the live feeds from one of her shows there. She exhibits so much energy and appears to be unstoppable.

One-Eyed Doll
This group is fronted by Kimberly with her crazy energy and incredible guitar skills with highly theatrical shows that she pulls off with the help of her best friend and drummer Junior. It's hard to believe that these guys rock so hard with just the 2 of them. She is a master story teller, and I joke that she would make the perfect psychotic kindergarten teacher. Those of you who have had the opportunity to see them live know exactly what I mean.

Cover vs. original - They're Coming To Take Me Away

 
Back to the discussion on cover songs vs. the original. I believe that bands will do cover song out of respect to the original artist. Whether they just like the song, have a special admiration for the artist or whether the songs touches them on some personal level. Some songs are just fun, party songs and put you in a good mood. Some are just off the chain crazy, such as the one that I am reviewing today. It also happens to be one of my personal favorites and makes me laugh whenever I hear it.

Napoleon IVX, or Jerry Samuels released "They're Coming to Take Me Away" in 1966. I'm sure back then, it was just crazy to hear this song. Talking about straight jackets and padded rooms. To some people, this may have been an obscure song, but a good one, none the less

Fast forward to 2014. The Butcher Babies released a version of this, that in my opinion is even better than the original. This band gives it a heavier, dark edge which endears fans to their version. They are no stranger to controversy but continue to wow audiences with each performance. They take their name from an older Wendy O. Williams song, "Butcher Baby".

This amazing band is no stranger to touring. As a matter of fact, I have missed them the last 3 times they have been in Charlotte, NC. I can promise you, I will not miss their next show. As good as the music is, I can't even begin to imagine what it is like to see them live,

9/11 My Tribute

 
When thinking about the blog today and wondering what to do it on, only 1 thing stood out. The 15th anniversary of 9/11. Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news about what was happening? I had just moved to Nashville TN, and lived about 20 minutes from a major Air Force base. Early that morning, I received a phone call from my sister asking me if I saw what was going on and to turn on the TV. I asked her what channel, and she responded, "It doesn't matter". The first plane had already struck the tower, but I clearly remember the 2nd plane and the Pentagon and Pa. It was unbelievable, one of the most surreal experiences that I can ever remember having. I had just moved 8 hours away from my closest family member and by the time I tried to call my parents, the phone lines had all crashed due to the volume of calls being placed.
I do not focus on the politics of the event, just the major loss of lives that happened that morning. I choose to focus and humbly express gratitude, especially to 1st responders and all of the volunteers that worked tirelessly for so long. I choose to cherish the members of the military and their families, that were immediately put on standby, for only God knew what was to come in the following days, months and even years. I could never express enough how much I appreciate all that these people did to help keep our country safe in the very confusing aftermath of that day.
It is a day that will never be forgotten and will always stand in infamy as one of the most tragic attacks on American soil. Following are just some great examples of some music that I found versions that are maybe a little different than what you have previously heard to honor all of those lost on that day.
